ADHD and ADD

Some people are more familiar with the term attention-deficit disorder (ADD). This was the term previously used by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) to describe the condition currently known as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Science now recognizes three subtypes of ADHD based on the primary ADHD symptoms present:4

  • ADHD, Primarily Inattentive

  • ADHD, Primarily Hyperactive/Impulsive

  • ADHD, Combined Type

While some individuals, including many professionals, still refer to the condition as ADD, this term is no longer in widespread use. The term ADD is sometimes used to describe ADHD that doesn't involve hyperactivity. However, using current terms, this type of ADHD should be referred to as ADHD, Primarily Inattentive.
