Successful ADHD Management of Child and Family

Coping strategies for the entire family

Successful family coping strategies should take into account each child's unique family situation and ADHD total treatment plan.

An important factor is the emotional health and stability of the child with ADHD. If a child's emotional needs are not met and he or she is exposed to an unsound environment early on, social and academic functioning may worsen, creating psychological problems.

Parents need to be aware of the type of problems that can emerge at home. Sibling rivalry is very common, especially in a family that has a child with ADHD. Complaints arise when the other children in the family feel slighted because they are given more responsibility and receive less attention than the child with ADHD. As sibling jealousy and resentment grow, the child with ADHD begins to feel social rejection at home. Parents should try to pay equal attention to all of their children.

Approximately 65% of children diagnosed with ADHD will continue to experience symptoms into adulthood.3 As an adult, the individual's personal and professional life may suffer due to problems associated with poor adjustments to the stresses of daily living.3

Educational, psychological, and/or behavioral therapy, when combined with medication, may help to manage ADHD within the family.
